Sudan sometimes feels like the poor relation to its northern neighbour Egypt. As well as a world-class collection of antiquities in the National Museum, Khartoum also sees the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers. 200km north, on the east bank of the Nile, lies Meroë, the site of over two hundred pyramids in varying states of repair. The place is still largely unknown, with little tourist infrastructure - there is not a hotel or guesthouse or restaurant in sight.
