Every Friday morning, from sunrise until midday, Emiratis gather at races tracks out in the desert. This tradition is as old as the country itself, and is virtually unknown to the millions of tourists that visit the country each year. The camels are ridden by remote controlled robot jockeys, with the pilots being driven round the racecourse as the camels run. Thoroughbred racing camels can fetch the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction, with the price depending on the calibre of and placing in the Friday morning races.
